Abstract
Objectives£º The purpose of this study seeks to find the cause of emotional and behavioral problems of children raised by custodial grandparents. We will try to identify any relationship among general demographic characteristics, degree of attachment and problems shown in children raised by their custodial grandparents.

Methods£ºThe study examined 51 children in 12 elementary schools in a city of Chung-cheong province, who live in a grandparent-only household. They were diagnosed through a clinical interview adopting the DSM-VI diagnostic criteria and secondarily, a semi-structural interviewing method of the Korean Kiddie-Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia-Present and Lifetime Version (K-SADS-PL). Employed inventories include the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC), Korean Inventory of Parents and Peer Attachment (IK-IPPA), Children¡¯s Depression Inventory (CDI), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (SAIC), Korean ADHD Rating Scales for Parents and Teachers, computerized ADS scores and Korean Child Personality Inventory for Teachers (KCPI-T).

Results£º The clinical interview employing the DSM-VI diagnostic criteria found 33 children (64.7%) had some relevant disease and 18 (35.3%) did not. The CDI found 7 of the surveyed (13.7%) complaining of depressed mood subjectively. The SAIC recognized 9 children (17.6%) complaining of anxiety subjectively. 19 (37.3%) under the K-ARS and 18 (35.3%) under the computerized ADS were presumed to have ADHD. The Logistic Regression Analysis explained that the less attachment they develop to their mother; the more likely they are to get a disease.

Conclusions£º This study found that children raised by their custodial grandparents have more emotional and behavioral problems than other children in the same age group. In addition, the frequency of meeting parents and the degree of attachment to mother were identified as a risk factor that contributes to contracting a disease.
